The City of Walla Walla would like residents to be aware of planned changes at the intersection of Division Street and Whitman Street. This week, Streets crews will make interim pedestrian safety improvements by installing tubular markers at the intersection to shorten crossing distances and improve driver awareness of pedestrians crossing at Division and Whitman. The tubular markers will represent the approximate curb extensions, also known as bulb-outs, planned for the upcoming 2023 Division and Whitman Pedestrian Improvements Project. The 2023 construction project will install sidewalk along Pioneer Park on Whitman Street, curb extensions at the Whitman/Division and Lincoln/Division intersections, street lighting, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at the Whitman/Division intersection. During development of the City's ADA Transition Plan in 2020, the city received numerous comments concerned with pedestrian safety and accessibility to Pioneer Park. The 2023 Division and Whitman Pedestrian Improvements Project will focus on making Pioneer Park safer and more accessible for all.
