The Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship in Nanaimo seeks bids from qualified contractors to conduct services related to Western Screech-owl (WESO), kennicottii subspecies inventory in the West Coast Region. Historic surveys for this species have been tightly associated with roads because the call play-back survey methods used were limited to safe night-time travel on roads. This contract has been developed to address the paucity of off-road surveys for WESO by using Automated Recording Units (ARUs) in remote locations. The successful proponent will develop a study design and collect acoustic recordings using ARUs in remote areas not previously inventoried. ARUs (64 x SongMeter Minis) and accessories (SD cards, batteries, and external hard drives) will be provided by the provincial government for the duration of this contract. Surveys should be conducted within the area indicated on Map 1 (west coast of Vancouver Island from south of Quatsino Sound to north of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park), focusing on contiguous patches of forest that has not previously been harvested. All survey locations should be in areas that have not been previously surveyed for WESO. The contract must be completed no later than March 31, 2023.
