Update:The City of Frederick purchased a large tract of land, 148 acres, on the west side of town to provide a regional park to serve the community and beyond. A master concept plan was approved in January of 2017 identifying potential amenities to include multi-purpose fields, indoor aquatic center, splash park, festival area, destination playground, walking/hiking/5k trails, community building/facility, parks division maintenance facility, pavilion/picnic shelters, restrooms and adequate parking. Planning for design and construction of upgrades to Butterfly Lane and an internal park road will take place in FY’18 and FY ’19. Thirty-five (35) acres of this park have been dedicated to POS protection. These 35 acres are on the west side of the park. In the fall of 2018, the entire parcel was rezoned as parkland. A West Side Regional Park Task Force was formed in the spring of 2017 to explore viable park amenities, pursue funding, and make recommendations on park infrastructure. The task force made recommendations in August of 2018 to revise the master plan slightly and pursue partners to initiate park design and construction.
