https://www.metrowestdailynews.com/story/news/local/2023/04/21/pfas-filtration-system-to-be-built-hopkinton-ma/70116649007/ The town has received bids and expects to soon start construction of a more than $1 million filtration system to remove the presence of forever chemicals from one well in the system. The Department of Public Works intends to build the filtration system attached to Well #6 on Fruit Street. The well, which has been tested monthly since July 2021, recently showed PFAS levels well over the state limit of 20 mg/l. The well was most recently tested last month, when PFAS concentrations were found to be twice as high as state standards. The new filtration system will cost more than $1 million, with two filtration vessels costing over $157,000, according to DPW Director John Westerling. Granulated activated carbon and ion exchange filters will be used. Westerling said the system is similar to that of a pool filter, with filters needing to be regularly cleaned. PFAS filters go online:Natick marks milestone in quest for clean water "The filtration media (the charcoal and the resin) may have to be replaced," he said. What are PFAS PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are widely used, long-lasting chemicals that break down slowly over time. Studies have shown that exposure to PFAS can lead to harmful health effects in humans and animals, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency's website. 'Forefront' of PFAS mitigation:Rep. Hogan lauds Hudson's new water treatment system "All of the water from the wells are combined into one in the entire distribution," Westerling said. Hopkinton unsure of PFAS sources It's not clear where the PFAS contamination is coming from. Earlier this month, town officials put out a news release saying that some have suggested that firefighting training operations that took place in town during the 1970s and 1980s may have contributed, but "the Town is presently without knowledge to judge the truth or accuracy of these suggestions." Hopkinton joins other area communities, including Hudson, Mendon and Natick, in moving to construct a filtration system to address PFAS. Westerling said the town has filed a notice of intent to award a contract for the construction, which is anticipated to begin next month. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Hopkinton Well #6 PFAS Filtration System.
