Saving Project...

Outdoor lighting and renovation of a mixed-use development in Elkton, Virginia. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility; and for outdoor lighting for a educational facility.

Capital improvement plan discussed at Rockingham County School Board meeting ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) - The Rockingham County School Board is considering changes that may be needed as developments are projected to push capacities in the county's schools. Superintendent Dr. Larry Shifflett presented the RCPS capital improvement plan at Monday night's school board meeting. That included updates on renovation projects at some of the county's schools, but current projects also showed that a new elementary school and redistricting could be on the table in the coming decades. Chair Matt Cross said that as they navigate these decisions, they need to keep the county's residents in mind. "We know that parents and kids love going to their school and they're going to be really upset when they find out they've got to go to another elementary school," Cross said. "But I think it's our job to be fiscally responsible with the taxpayer money and say, hey, we've got a lot of room here on the east end that we could possibly use, and it's not because we want to, but we're really kind of being forced that way to do that." Shifflett added that the division should finish renovations at Elkton Elementary School before planning to move students. A book is retained Only one book was on the agenda for consideration from the Superintendent's content review committee during Tuesday night's meeting. The board voted unanimously to retain "Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale" by Lauren Myracle following Shifflett's recommendation. ----------------- The Original section of Elkton Elementary dated 1939 and the 1972 addition to the building currently operates an HVAC system that approaches 50 years old. Individual room unit parts are becoming obsolete. Proposed renovations include new HVAC components, new windows, new doors, new flooring, new ceilings, new lighting, additional electrical circuits, asbestos abatement, kitchen updates and painting. Funding for the school renovation will be provided through the use of school fund reserve. Project is included Rockingham County Fiscal Year 2025-2029. As of November 12, 2024, project is scheduled for construction FY2025. Project bids are due November 26, 2024. Construction to start February 2025 and be completed August 2026. An architect has been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
