Renovation of a library in Belmont, Massachusetts. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a library.
All questions pertaining to this Invitation to Bid must be submitted in writing to Building Conservation Associates, Inc. at lharrington@bcausa.com by April 21, 2023. The Facilities Department for the Town of Belmont invites bids for FY23 to provide all equipment, labor, and materials for the Chimney Rebuild and Associated Repairs for the Benton Library. Built in 1892, the Benton Library in Belmont, MA was originally constructed as a chapel and now serves as an auxiliary branch library, owned by the Town of Belmont. The historic building is constructed of unreinforced stone masonry consisting of cobbles and boulders. In January 2022 the building's stone chimney collapsed, causing damage to the adjacent asphalt roof and structural interior rafters. Scope includes rebuilding of the chimney to its original appearance and dimensions (down to sound masonry), repair of the damaged roof and interior rafters, replacement of the damaged bulkhead, repointing of the existing exterior masonry in the affected area, repointing of interior foundation masonry in the affected area of the basement, and installation of a copper gutter system in the affected area. This project will require adherence to the United States Secretary of the Interior, Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings and will require the awarded contractor be regularly engaged with work on historic buildings.
