Excavation for Identification of Water Sources. The work under this contract shall consist of all work necessary to locate and excavate down to water service lines to determine their material composition. This work will be in various locations throughout the City of Boston. The Contractor will be furnished with a list of locations for which information regarding the material composition of water service pipes is needed. The contract list can be found in Appendix XIII. In particular, the Commission wishes to determine the location of lead pipe in order to replace that pipe with copper. The Contractor will be responsible for locating the service control valve, internally or externally, prior to the commencement of work. The Contractor will locate each service and provide two (2) identifications using non-destructive excavation method within the sidewalk and to a maximum depth of 8 feet. The normal depth of water service is 5 to 6 feet. The excavation will be along the service from the property line to the curb line along the alignment of the pipe. After locating and excavating down to the pipe, the Contractor will verify the material composition of the pipe. It will be necessary to expose each pipe and clean the pipe so as to be able to identify the material by sight. The contractor shall determine the material composition of the private service at the property line and in the public way. When a service is identified as lead it will be at the Engineer's discretion if the Contractor or Commission will replace the lead service. If it is determined others will replace the lead service, the excavation shall then be backfilled with processed gravel material. A temporary pavement consisting of 3" of hot bituminous mix will be placed over the excavation within 48 hours of the work. Cold patch will be required in the interim. Question Deadline 03/26/2023 All questions shall be submitted in writing to the Chief Engineer and written answers to such questions will be sent by the Chief Engineer to every individual or firm on record as having taken a set of specifications. No questions will be answered unless received at least ten (10) calendar days prior to the expiration of the time set for filing bids.
