Site work for a road / highway in Denver, Colorado. Completed plans call for site work for a road / highway.

The Moving Mountain Coal Mine is a site where extreme erosion has been propagating for almost a century. In a period of time from 1932 to 1933 the gaseous coal mine on Carbon Mountain was prone to explosions. Some locals believed that the Carbon Mountain was actually a volcano due to all the explosions. Landslides on site continued through into the 1950's and 1980's. One theory is that a coal seam fire intersected gas pockets in the mine, causing the explosions. The hill side is marked with red dog sediments and rocks, which is a marker of previous combustion and oxidation of iron in the rocks and soil. In total the previous mining, explosions, and combustion of the coal on the hill side has made the hill side unstable and prone to landslides. This sediment movement has continued into the present day and there are large gulley's and erosional features across this extremely disturbed mine site. After mining the site was also used as landfill and is now currently used as a shooting range. The instability of the sediment and waste rock on site is increasing sedimentation in the Animas River. The goal of the project is to stabilize the site through installation of stormwater controls, which will help mitigate sediment migration off site. Gas seepage from the mine workings and rock formation also continue into the present day and for that reason access to mining features will be eliminated. The project work will include routing and detaining stormwater, improving roadside ditches with filter fabric and rip-rap, building a stormwater pond with inlet and outlet structures, improving the stormwater channel above the site and regrading, and closing the area next to the historic portal entrances where there is off-gassing of hydrogen sulfide gas from the mine workings, and closing a portal known as MM02.
