USask is planning to optimize existing space at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) to support the increase of students enrolled in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Addition of new space may be required. Optimizing existing space and/or adding new space will allow for a substantial increase in the DVM class size, with a staged increase of enrolment beginning in fall 2025. The expanded and renovated spaces will include student facilities such as washrooms, locker rooms and gathering spaces, as well as size-adaptable classroom and laboratory spaces. The project will also involve the college's teaching hospital facilities (accredited by both Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) standards and American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) standards), animal housing and handling facilities (Canadian Council of Animal Care and University of Animal Care Committee regulations), and office/gathering spaces for instructors and support staff. TIMELINE: Project is early planning stage. Request for Proposals from consultants for completion of a Space Optimization Study has been awarded. The study is expected to identify functional areas requiring investigation and identify space needs that require accommodation. The report must provide a staged completion plan to allow for the creation of new or renovated spaces while maintaining current operations as the increased student population moves through the four-year veterinary program.
