This project provides for the construction of additional wells to augment the City's supply of raw water. With the General Motors' contamination and the state buy-out of the Cook Park wells, added supply will be needed to meet Zenith Plant demands. Additionally, those wells that were constructed in the early 1970's and early 1980's are showing a significant loss in yield due to plugging of the gravel pack over time. As yields decrease, the ability to adjust plant operations becomes less cost effective as more wells need to be utilized. When water demand is high, every vertical well is in operation with no redundancy. A decision needs to be made as to the future of these wells, located on the riverfront. Well #2 is an example of the above language. Well #2 was supposed to be rehabilitated in the summer of 2022 but was found to be pumping sand. Staff is now working to offset and redrill this well, returning it to production as it is a vital part of the operation. This project also will address the addition of supply to the Southbridge Water Treatment Plant. At this time, only one collector well has been constructed to supply the Southbridge Water Plant. As water demands increase in the Southbridge area, an additional collector well will be needed. This additional well not only provides the water needed daily but also gives the Southbridge plant redundancy. The unprogrammed budget of $5,776,600 allows for an additional collector well, which may be needed in the future if water demands increase. This project is included in the fy 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program.
