The owner has selected a Construction Manager. The City of Holtville ("the City") intends to construct a Wetlands area along the Alamo River west of Holtville, utilizing grant funding from the United States Bureau of Reclamation ("BoR"). The Holtville Alamo River Wetlands Project ("Project") is a longtime collaboration between the City, the Imperial Irrigation District (IID), the County of Imperial, the Salton Sea Authority, local conservation group Desert Wildlife Unlimited (501.3c) and BoR. In the early 2000's, BoR deeded 15 acres to the City of Holtville, IID deeded 16 acres, and the City, acting on behalf of the Citizens Congressional Task Force, acquired the remaining acres of property needed to support the proposed Project. The 57.71 acre Project is located on one of the 36 priority sites identified by the Task Force for water quality improvement. The Task Force's mission is to improve water quality in the New and Alamo Rivers. These Wetlands will improve the water quality of the Alamo River, with a secondary benefit of creating valuable wetlands habitat. Engineering, environmental analysis, permitting and other work was completed by 2006 in anticipation of construction funding, but that did not come to fruition with the nation's economic downturn. In February, 2016, the City was apprised of a renewed funding opportunity and worked with the aforementioned stakeholders to revive the project, securing the funding. The existing design required refinement, along with procurement of required permits (all had expired) to move the Project forward. A Design engineer was subsequently secured, but delays in that process once again forestalled the project, however, the design was eventually approved and building permits have recently been secured.
