Project Description: Develop dam reconstruction plans for the Net River Dam that failed in April 2022. Temporary dam repairs, water intake structure modifications, lowering of the impoundment water level, and installing a temporary diversion channel occurred in the Fall of 2022. The Wildlife Division (WLD) intends to modernize and reconstruct the dam structure to maintain the existing impoundment footprint. The impoundment originated in the 1950s as a wetland mitigation feature related to past Cleveland Cliffs, Inc. operations. The site is also culturally important for the wild rice restoration project with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Reconstruction costs have been preliminarily estimated to be upwards of $1.6 million. The site is temporarily stabilized but a permanent solution is required as soon as possible. Construction could be completed by winter 2023 if funding is secured quickly this FY Please do not submit online questions via SIGMA VSS. ALL questions should be emailed to Tom Pawlowski at pawlowskit@michigan.gov address no later than 5:00 p.m., Eastern on June 15, 2023.
