This project provides for installing and upgrading the interconnection between the City’s 425+ traffic signals, new technologies in traffic control systems and maintaining up-to-date traffic signal timing and coordination plans. Iowa DOT Traffic Safety funds and Iowa Clean Air Attainment Program funds are often used to supplement City funding for these projects. Included in this project is a phased program to update all the City’s traffic signal timing and coordination plans, add battery back-up units to key intersections and replacement of the City’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure (traffic signal controllers, traffic management software, observation camera system, etc.) with technologies to meet our current needs and provide flexibility for the future. Phase 1 of the ITS Master Plan was completed in December 2021. Phase 2 of the ITS Master Plan is planned to be completed in December 2022. Design for Phase 3 of the ITS Master Plan will be completed in FY2023. This project is included in the city's fy 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program.
