Site work and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Rochester, Minnesota. Design plans call for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; and for site work for a bridge / tunnel.
As of September 2024, the project is in design and in the community input process. Construction is expected to begin in 2026. The 6th Street Bridge is the result of an initiative by the City of Rochester to develop a “Downtown Waterfront Southeast Small Area Plan,” seeking to revitalize a 60+ acre location adjacent to the Zumbro River. The 6th Street Bridge will connect the developed neighborhood to downtown Rochester, creating a connected street network that supports integrated economic development. In support of this initiative, the City contracted with Perkins & Will Consulting to develop conceptual designs of the 6th Street Bridge. The preferred design will feature traffic calming measures, dedicated bike lanes, landscaping & enhanced pedestrian features. This project will also feature enhanced access to the riverfront, through improvement and additions to ADA accessible trails, and improvements to 6th Street to the West up to 2nd Ave SW and to the East up to 500’ East of the Zumbro River and from 3rd Ave SE to 9th Ave SE. There are floodwalls, parks, landscaping architecture with pedestrian waterfront access as well as storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main within this corridor. The water main is expected to need replacement. Storm sewer is expected to be reconstructed as needed to meet the new roadway configuration. In addition, storm water management facilities will be required for stormwater discharge attenuation and water quality treatment commensurate with City standards. Sanitary sewer is expected to require manhole adjustments and potentially some repairs. The project will be funded by a “Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity” (RAISE) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and local City funds.
