Demolition, site work and new construction of a mixed-use development in Madison, Wisconsin. Completed plans call for the demolition of a three-unit residential development; and for the construction of a 149,200-square-foot, six-story above grade educational facility.
Plans call for the demolition of 3 residences and the construction of a new 6 story academic building. As of November 3, 2023, this project out to bid and bids are due November 8th at 2 p.m. An architect has been selected. Construction is anticipated to start in January 2024 and be completed by April 2026. *The bid list for this project may be incomplete. If you have been invited to bid on this project by the owner, please notify our editorial staff at contentcase@constructconnect.com. In general the work consists of a new six story, plus mechanical penthouse, 142,694 GSF academic building. This project creates a new unified home for eight departments, programs, and centers (collectively called Units) within the College of Letters and Science by consolidating and co-locating spaces currently spread across multiple facilities on campus. The proposed building will include 13 classrooms ranging from 24 seats to 426 seats, along with offices and support areas for each Unit. In addition, there will be a variety of academic support spaces, informal gathering spaces, a cafe, bike commuter room, rooftop mechanical penthouse, and Ground Floor level raised loading dock. The building is organized around a central grand stair and a series of two-story voids stepping up through the building to a Fourth Floor exterior two-story high outdoor terrace. The sloping site will provide grade-level access on the south to the Ground Floor and on the north to the First Floor. Levy Hall is the first project of the campus Master Plan objective to develop the entire block bounded by Johnson (north), Park (east), Dayton (south), and Brooks (west) Streets. The block is bisected by Clymer Court running between Park Street and Brooks Street. Two residence halls (Susan B. Davis Hall and Zoe Bayliss Co-Op), along with a single-family residence at the corner of Johnson and Brooks Streets, will be demolished as part of the project to make space for Levy Hall. In addition, three residences south of Clymer Court will be demolished under a separate contract just after commencement of this project to provide limited staging and lay-down space for this project. The new facility will be a poured-in-place concrete structure with selected post-tensioned beams. Cladding will be brick, architectural precast panels, aluminum curtain wall, and aluminum storefront. The roof will be fully-adhered EPDM, but will be hot fluid applied at a series of vegetated roofs. The mechanical penthouse will be clad with metal panels. Interior partitions are primarily metal studs and drywall with solid core wood doors in hollow metal frames. Floors are primarily epoxy terrazzo, carpet, polished concrete topping, and porcelain tile; ceilings are primarily acoustical panel lay-in, drywall, acoustical plaster, and exposed structure. Systems include two 4,000-lb passenger traction elevators, public water, storm, sanitary, and electrical; campus chilled water, steam, and signal; stormwater irrigation cistern, and 2,600 square feet of rooftop photovoltaic panels. The two largest classrooms will have tiered floors with underfloor dispersion air distribution. The facility will also house a 250-kW natural gas emergency generator
