The City of Columbia, SC is soliciting proposals from qualified Consultants to develop a 10-Year Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Recreation throughout the United States is an important element in total quality of life for all segments of the community. From the earliest settlers, it has been recognized that recreation and parks is a primary service to be provided by the Government. The City of Columbia realizes the importance of parks and recreation as a catalyst for health and quality of life for its citizens. Parks are more than amenities that provide public places to play, they are key factors that spur economic development, increase the quality of life for its citizens, form the core of many neighborhoods and bring these neighborhoods and communities together. The City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for providing recreational and leisure services for the citizens and visitors to the City of Columbia. With an annual budget of approximately $13.4 million, the staff program and maintain: o Over 60 city parks and green spaces
o Over 600 acres of city-maintained park land
o 55 tennis courts
o 16 city pools, spray pads and ponds
o 9 city-maintained fountains The City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department is seeking proposals from qualified consulting firms to provide professional service to develop a 10-Year Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The plan will establish a long term strategy focusing on creating an environment where our park spaces continue to transcend and surpass serving as recreation hubs for Midlands' citizens. We envision City of Columbia Parks and Recreation locations as crossroads where technology, diversity, health and wellness, mental well-being, inclusiveness, and environmental sustainability come together. The department is seeking the development of a comprehensive plan identifying current and future community needs for recreation programming, parks, greenways, and recreational facilities. The plan will provide a framework for future development or redevelopment of the parks and recreation system over the next ten years and serve as a road map for policy development concerning location, park usage, resource allocation and levels of service.
