https://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/2025/04/9-major-road-construction-projects-to-watch-in-kalamazoo-county-in-2025.html KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — Flowers are blooming, birds are singing and orange barrels are popping up along Michigan roadways. It’s spring in Kalamazoo County. Some projects are already underway, with others coming soon. Here’s a look at the expected start, end and closure dates for nine of the most impactful projects planned for Kalamazoo County in 2025. City of Kalamazoo City officials promise this year’s construction season will be more manageable than last year’s. The two-way conversion of Kalamazoo Avenue, originally slated to begin this year, has been pushed back due to federal funding delays. But there are still several significant projects on the schedule. 1. Eliminating a floodplain on Westnedge Avenue This $9 million project will eliminate flooding along Westnedge Avenue near the coming downtown arena site. Underground water and sewer lines will be updated with larger pipes, per city documents. This work is supported by a $38 million federal grant and $5.8 million from the event center developer, according to city documents. Work is on Westnedge Avenue between Kalamazoo and Michigan avenues is expected to start in June, Baker said. The project should last through November. Westnedge Avenue traffic will be detoured onto Michikal Street and Michigan Avenue, Baker said. 2. Paving a different section of Westnedge Avenue Traffic on Westnedge Avenue will shift to accommodate repaving between Vine Street and Michigan Avenue. The work will cost $860,623 — it’s covered in part by MDOT funds and $68,391 from the city. Construction is slated to begin June 9 and end mid-August. 3. Gull Road bridge work Work on Gull Road as it passes over the Kalamazoo River will kick off the season on Tuesday, April 15. The $350,450 bridge maintenance project is expected to wrap up in August, Public Services Director James Baker said. This project won’t require any detours, Baker said, but traffic will shift to just one lane of traffic in both directions while work is underway. Portage 4. South Westnedge Avenue reconstruction The city of Portage is reconstructing part of South Westnedge Avenue for $1.9 million this summer. The 1.3-mile stretch of road between Osterhout Avenue and South Shore Drive was rated “poor” in a 2022 state road assessment. Underground work will require reconstructing the road, per city documents. Work is slated to begin April 28 and wrap up in September, said Portage spokesperson Mary Beth Block. The project is funded 100% by local funds with no state or federal participation, according to city documents. 5. West Milham Avenue reconstruction Reconstruction on West Milham Avenue will be less intrusive than work on South Westnedge Avenue, Block said. Underground fiber is going in between 12th Street and Oakland Avenue, Block said. The $3 million project will require traffic shifts into a turn lane along the route, but travel through the area will be maintained while work is underway June through September. Sprinkle Road Work on Sprinkle Road in Comstock Township is facing setbacks after a driver ran over a freshly-poured concrete median on April 10, per Road Commission of Kalamazoo County officials. Sprinkle Road median Construction workers assess damage to a freshly-poured median on Sprinkle Road. The destruction will set the project back, officials said.Road Commission of Kalamazoo County Work between I-94 and Road 581 includes a new concrete shoulder, concrete median, rumble strips and paving. One lane is closed in both directions while work is underway. MDOT work on U.S. 131 7. Business loop interchange A $19 million highway project will add connections between U.S. 131 and the business loop north of downtown Kalamazoo. The project includes adding two more ramps – from northbound U.S. 131 onto the business route and from the business route onto to southbound U.S. 131 (as shown in orange on the map, below). Proposed U.S. 131 interchanges The orange lines represent the proposed routes of two new interchanges connecting U.S. 131 and U.S. 131 Business Route in Kalamazoo County. Both of the new ramps will require a new bridge, per MDOT. Work began at the end of February and is expected to wrap up in November. Road work will require total closures on five weekends, which are still to be announced. Otherwise, both highways will remain open to traffic with single-lane closures during the project. 8. U.S. 131 at West Main Street MDOT is making changes to the U.S. 131 and West Main Street/M-43 interchange, among other upgrades in the area. The $10 million project entails widening West Main Street, removing a southbound off-ramp and adding traffic signals to the intersection. Exit 38A on southbound U.S. 131 will not be replaced, per MDOT. Instead, the 38B exit ramp will have a new traffic light added at West Main Street so traffic can turn in both directions. Closures, costs and renderings will be available once a contractor has signed on for the work, MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa said previously. 9. New bridges over KL Avenue, train tracks US 131 bridge construction U.S. 131 bridges over KL Avenue and the Amtrak railroad shown in a Google Maps image. The bridges will be rebuilt in a project beginning in 2024 and finishing in 2026, MDOT said. (Google Maps)(Google Maps) Crews are on Year 2 of a three-year, $24 million effort to replace U.S. 131 bridges over KL Avenue and Amtrak rail lines. That project resumed on March 10 and is expected to last through November. U.S. 131 bridges over KL Avenue and the Amtrak railroad shown in a Google Maps image. The bridges will be rebuilt in a project beginning in 2024 and finishing in 2026, MDOT said. KL Avenue is closed while crews work on two bridges carrying highway overhead, per MDOT. The Stadium Drive ramp to northbound U.S. 131 is closed through June 26, per MDOT. A detour will take drivers along Stadium Drive, Drake Road and West Main Street. Two lanes in both directions will remain open on U.S. 131 while work is underway, though lanes will shift to a temporary bridge as work progresses. ---------------------------------------------------- Reference Number 0000377355 The City of Portage invites interested Contractors to submit a sealed bid for the provision of construction services for the road reconstruction of South Westnedge Avenue from Osterhout Avenue to South Shore Drive to include water main lining and replacement, crush and shape, storm drainage improvements, sidewalk installation, resurfacing and restoration.
