Site work for a mixed-use development in Calgary, Alberta. Completed plans call for site work for a road / highway; sidewalk / parking lot; and water / sewer project.
During the construction of Deerfoot Trail in the 1970's, Nose Creek was straightened and channelized impacting the creeks natural ecology and fluvial processes. Due to the straightening, which was compounded by the increases in runoff resulting from the ongoing urbanization of the watershed, the channel has begun downcutting resulting in observed incision depths of up to 2.5 m. This incision process is expected to continue to a theoretical maximum incision depth of 6.7 m at the confluence of West Nose Creek. Downcutting has also resulted in bank erosion impacts to several storm outfalls and bridge piers, with the potential to impact other infrastructure such as pipeline crossings, roads, and pathways. This project will look at approaches for stabilizing the channel downcutting, mitigating further bank erosion and infrastructure impacts. In addition, opportunities to improve the overall stream corridor ecology and recreational use should also be investigated as part of any solution.
