Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Manning, South Carolina. Design plans call for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and for paving for a bridge / tunnel.
Travelers driving across South Carolina's largest lake may soon do so more safely after the state received federal funding for a badly needed bridge replacement project. The state is set to embark on major work to replace four bridges carrying Interstate 95 traffic over Lake Marion in the central part of the state. The new bridge could affect travelers across the country: I-95 is a main artery that ties together the Eastern Seaboard. In a July 17 announcement, the S.C. Department of Transportation revealed it had received $175 million in federal funding to complete the project. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes to replace the four bridges along I-95 over Lake Marion in Clarendon and Orangeburg Counties. This includes the large two-lane northbound and southbound bridges over Lake Marion and the smaller two-lane northbound and southbound relief bridges over the lake. The Lake Marion relief bridges provide an overflow for Lake Marion to the north of an existing causeway. Additionally, the replacement of the existing I-95 Lake Marion southbound vehicular bridges would include the construction of a new two-way pedestrian and bicycle facility. The adjacent existing US 301 pedestrian bridge (currently closed to all traffic) would be retained. The proposed Bridge Replacements would include: Removal of the existing northbound and southbound I-95 bridges once the new structures are complete. Removal of abandoned in-water wooden pilings to the west of the current I-95 bridges and east of the US 301 bridge. Two 12-foot travel lanes would be provided in both the southbound and northbound directions. A 10-foot minimum inside shoulder (shoulders may be wider due to staging requirements) and 12-foot outside shoulder would be provided. There will be a barrier separated 14-foot shared use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the southbound bridge only. The bridge deck widths would be large enough to accommodate an additional 12-foot travel lane in the future, if needed. As of August 26, 2024, per owner, construction has not started on the project. It is being delivered as a Design-Build contract. Procurement is scheduled to begin in quarter 4 of this year. Contract should be underway in quarter 4 of 2025. The Engineer of Record will be a part of the future Design-Build team. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
