Here are the plans Work has begun on a project aimed to transform the Greater Binghamton Airport into a modern, state-of-the-art facility, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday. In September 2022, Hochul announced New York's upstate airports, faced with economic challenges as airlines leave or cut back on flights, would get $230 million in state funding to spruce up terminals, fix baggage claim areas and make other upgrades. The money has been divided among nine airports -- in Binghamton, Albany, Watertown, Syracuse, Rochester, Ogdensburg, Saratoga County, Sullivan County, and Adirondack Airport in Franklin County. "A state-of-the-art airport provides an essential foundation that will enable local communities to grow their economies, create jobs and improve their quality of life," Hochul said in a statement Tuesday. "The improvements we are making to the Greater Binghamton Airport will make it the perfect welcome to those visiting the beautiful Southern Tier." What improvements are coming to Binghamton airport Built in 1945, Hochul's office said the Greater Binghamton Airport is a travel hub for prominent local employers including Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, The Raymond Corporation, Dick's Sporting Goods and Binghamton University, but the main terminal has not been renovated in more than two decades and its features are outdated. The modernization project, which has an estimated total cost of $47.8 million, includes the following upgrades: Redevelopment of the Airport Road approach Construction of a new canopy and entry portals Reconfiguration of the ticketing lobby and outbound baggage area Renovation of the departures lobby and lounge Renovation of the baggage claim area and relocation of rental car counters Installation of a new parking revenue control system Construction of a new 6,400-square-foot Customs and Border Protection Facility ____________________________________ The deadline for submitting inquiries related to this project is 5:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, November 1, 2023. The project generally consists of the following: Construction of maintenance and protection of traffic measures. Demolition of the temporary hold room, landside toilet rooms, and rental car area. Renovation of the General Aviation/Fixed Base Operator Terminal. Renovation of the central vestibule and baggage claim areas. Construction of a multipurpose space in the existing rental car area. Construction of electrical and IDF rooms. Installation of security and access control infrastructure. Installation of interior and exterior signage and finishes. Landscape improvements and plantings. Painting of water tower exterior. Installation of a mast light adjacent to the General Aviation apron
