Reference number : 1781776 Deadline for receiving complaints: 2023-12-06 The Otto Maass Chemistry Building is located at the corner of Rue Sherbrooke Ouest and Rue University on McGill University's downtown campus. This building was built between 1964 and 1966 by the architectural firm of Fleming and Smith and was named in honor of the chairman of the chemistry department active during the Second World War. The Otto Maass building has a total of five floors, including the basement, which measures approximately 12,035 m2 cumulatively. The structure of the Otto Maass Building is made of concrete, but the exterior of the building is clad in Queenston limestone, making it the last building on campus to be built with real stone. The structure is divided into four blocks, each of slightly different dimensions, arranged in an L-shape; three are located along Sherbrooke Street and one runs along University Street. These large units are connected by smaller, glazed staircases. Both sides of the L-shaped wings frame a terrace on the surface. The project includes the transformation of the current humid laboratory located in room 025 of the Otto Maass Chemistry building into a dry laboratory to be able to accommodate new lasers with ultrafast technical capabilities to visualize quantum dynamics at the atomic scale.
