Plans call to convert a vehicle lane into a protected two-way bike lane running through the heart of the downtown tourism district. The Texas Department of Transportation, to build the nearly mile-long Market Street Cycle Track. The route will run on Market Street from its crossing with Flores Street, next to City Hall, all the way to Alamo Street, where it will zigzag north toward Shops at Rivercenter mall and east on Commerce Street to end at Interstate 37. In building the route, the city will reduce that stretch of Commerce Street, which many visitors use to get from the interstate, from four to three traffic lanes, and of Market Street from three to two lanes, according to information supplied by the city's Public Works Department in an email. Market Street also features a bus-only lane. The route will help provide "a needed east-west bike connection in the downtown area that is not in existence today," the city's Public Works Department said in an emailed statement. As of January 7, 2025, the San Antonio City Council approved a funding agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation to accept $15.8 million in federal funding. Construction is slated to begin in fall 2026 and wrap up in 2028. However, information regarding design firm and general contractor selection has not been released.
