The expansion will include two synthetic turf college-size baseball fields with lights, two synthetic multipurpose fields with lights, restrooms, more than 1,000 parking spots, a playground, a dog park, a fitness station, a plaza that emits mists of water, shade shelters and a 5-kilometer trail. Henrico awarded the contract to Southwood Building Systems, a Hanover County-based firm. The county received three bids for the work. The new section of the park will be built over 16 acres of swampy wetlands. To offset the impact on the land, Henrico purchased about $1 million in wetland credits, said John Zannino, director of Henrico’s Division of Recreation & Parks. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires builders to purchase credits, which are sent to a special bank for wetlands and are designed to create similar environmental areas elsewhere in the county. Work is expected to begin next month and finish in the summer of 2025. Part of construction includes clearing even more space for four more college-sized baseball fields in a future development. Glover Park, which is on Greenwood Road in Glen Allen, currently has four turf fields with lights and eight sand volleyball courts. Henrico and Chesterfield counties have pushed to expand the facilities available for travel sports tournaments. Henrico recently opened the Henrico Sports & Events Center to host basketball, volleyball and more at the site of the old Virginia Center Commons mall. Chesterfield is expanding River City Sportsplex. Though they cost more to build than natural grass, synthetic fields have benefits. They drain quickly and are considered safe to play on immediately after rainfall. They also require little day-to-day maintenance. Many of the high schools in greater Richmond already replaced their grass football fields with synthetic turf. But most high school baseball fields are still real grass. __________________________________________________ The Work consists of expansion of the existing park and new construction on the Glover Park site, a 209-acre park located at 11217 Greenwood Road, Glen Allen, VA 23059. The Phase II project will complete the development of the tournament quality sports complex and provide new amenities to Glover Park. The sports field related work will add two new NCAA sized (440' center field) synthetic turf baseball fields, dugouts, bullpens, scoreboards, and new LED sports lighting. The project will complete clearing, earthwork, and grading for 4 future baseball fields, and provide two full sized (225' x 360') synthetic turf multi-purpose fields with LED sports lighting, and a new 1,770 sf restroom building. Civil engineering work will include earthwork, site grading, approximately 1,250 new parking spaces provided in multiple lots throughout the site, along with drive aisles and roads connecting the existing parking lots to the newly constructed Lambert Way; the Public Works project which will be constructing the Lambert Way entry road from Woodman Road up to the center of the site for this project's connection. The new park amenities will include dog park, a large playground, fitness station area, misting pole plaza, shade shelters throughout the site, and a stone dust 5- kilometer trail through the woods on the northern portion of the site. The utility infrastructure improvements will include water and sewer plus new sanitary pump station and storm water piping improvements/BMP's. All supporting activities required to complete the project will be included such as DEQ/Army Corps permit compliance, Henrico County POD compliance, tree clearing, storm water improvements, landscaping, irrigation, landscape architecture components, and pedestrian site light.
