The Goochland High School Additions and Renovations project is the second and final major construction phase of Goochland County's landmark November 2021 bond referendum — and it has experienced meaningful delays driven by post-pandemic construction cost escalation. The first phase, the new Goochland Elementary School, is now complete and open. The high school work is next in line, though it has been pushed from its original timeline. The planned scope for Goochland High School is substantial for a rural county-wide school. It includes a 30,000 square foot addition to the high school to meet the needs of CTE programs and support STEM instruction, the addition of a new auxiliary gymnasium and wrestling room (Goochland High School is one of only three schools in VHSL Region 3B without an auxiliary gym), and renovations to the interior of both the middle school and high school to provide additional space for fine arts programs and modernize classrooms. The original plan called for preliminary design to begin Fall 2023, with construction anticipated to start a year later, occurring over several years. Goochland County However, that schedule has slipped. The November 2024 GCPS Capital Improvement Plan draft presented to the school board acknowledged that a steep increase in construction costs occurred in 2022 — the same inflationary pressure that nearly derailed the elementary school project — and formally pushed the GHS CTE addition one year to the FY 2026–27 window. This means the most current projected construction timeline for the CTE addition is FY 2026–27 (beginning July 2026), with a likely opening in 2027 or 2028 depending on scope and phasing. The auxiliary gymnasium and interior renovation components have no separately published schedule and may be phased to follow the CTE addition. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
