Fiberglass Repair Clemson University is seeking a qualified contractor to perform fiberglass tub and shower repair services. It is anticipated the majority of projects will take place on Clemson's campus in Clemson SC. A. Identify the area that you need to repair. 1. If the tub has a factory-installed SRS, try to keep the repair within that area. This will make your job look much nicer and will make it easier to blend in with the tub. B. Clean the bottom of the tub with Step 1 and Step 2 cleaners. See Steps 1 and 2 Cleaners SOP. 1. Take care to not saturate the damaged area. 2. Dry the cracked area with a heat gun, if necessary. C. Aggressively sand the bottom with 36-grit sandpaper using a dual-action (DA) sander. The rougher, the better. Make sure the sander in use has a vacuum attachment. 1. Vacuum up any dust and debris. D. If there is a crack that extends beyond the existing SRS area, first perform a fiberglass repair on that crack. Often, it is better to make a small crack bigger to fill the void and bring it back flush by adding some resin and pieces of fiberglass mat. 1. Additionally, decide if the factory SRS needs to be sanded off. E. Wipe the bottom with lacquer thinner. This will help remove any additional dust and open the pores of the sanded fiberglass. F. Mask off the top dam, the sides of the tub, and any areas not being repaired to prevent accidental scratches and to minimize any mess while you are working on the bottom. 1. Additionally, apply 2-inch masking tape around the area to be repaired to protect it. G. Layout layers of fiberglass mat and size them to fit the tub. 1. Stack them in the order you are going to apply. 2. Each layer of mat should be cut at least 1" larger than the layer below to avoid creating a hard edge or line. 3. Fray the edges to avoid having a hard line. H. Apply MM-4 bonding agent. See MM-4 Bonding Agent SOP. I. Apply Sunrez to the sanded bottom; thoroughly saturating the bottom. Make sure to shake or stir the container of Sunrez before using. J. Add the first layer of the fiberglass mat. K. Use a 2"-3" chip brush to dab the resin into the fiberglass mat. Avoid a heavy brushing motion that could move the fiberglass mat. Dab from the middle to the outside of the repair to push any air out from under the repair. L. Use your finned aluminum bristle resin roller to bring the resin to the surface of the mat. After rolling out the fiberglass, it should have a clear or transparent look. If the resin is milky-looking or has a white appearance, then continue to roll out the mat. The discolored appearance indicates air is trapped air or an insufficient amount of resin has been applied. M. Lay on the second layer of mat and roll on additional resin making sure it is completely saturated. This layer should extend beyond the first layer below it. A third layer of mat may be added for additional strength. More layers may be needed for heavier customers. N. Add a layer of fiberglass cloth. Again, roll out more resin, making sure there are no bubbles and all layers are saturated. O. Add a final layer of veil fabric. Roll on the veil making sure it too is saturated with Sunrez. The veil will help smooth the final surface and reduce the amount of sanding needed. P. Take the time to get the resin as smooth as possible to avoid extra sanding once cured. Allow time for the resin to self-level. Use the chip brush to lightly smooth out the resin. Taking some additional time to smooth out now will save additional sanding when resin is dry. Don't apply too much filler without fiberglass material support or the resin can become brittle and crack. Q. Once all the layers are on and rolled to eliminate air bubbles, you're ready to activate the resin by using a Sunrez lamp. R. Use the lamp to rapidly cure the Sunrez. Hold the light. Never put the light on a stand or leave it unattended. S. After all the layers have been cured with the light, apply an additional very thin layer of pure resin with a foam roller to fill any pin holes or rough spots. 1. Only apply a very thin layer of resin as a thick layer is likely to crack. 2. Use the lamp on this additional resin to cure it. T. After the resin is cured, use cold water to cool and harden repair before sanding. U. Use a solvent wipe to remove any wax build up before sanding. V. Sand the entire repair area with 80-grit sandpaper using a DA sander. W. Vacuum up all dust and debris often. Wipe off any remaining fine dust with a tack rag. X. Apply Duraglas or Everglass as necessary to fill any voids and smooth out transition lines. Sand the surface and feather out the edges with the appropriate progression grit sandpaper (80- to 220-grit). Y. Check for pinholes. 1. Use glazing putty to fill pinholes. 2. Sand smooth. Z. Vacuum up dust and debris often. Wipe off any remaining fine dust with a tack rag. AA.Apply a clear MM-4 bonding agent on top of the fiberglass repair before applying SRS BB. Tape off the template for SRS. CC. Tint SRS coating to color match tub. DD.Roll on an SRS with a 4" foam roller. Refer to SRS SOP for more details. The total price will be the basis of the award. A breakdown of project costs may be attached separately with the bid submission. All costs and fees must be included. No other charges will be considered. Any difference between the bidding schedule total and the online total, the online bid total will take precedence.
