As of March 19, 2025, a feasibility study has been finalized. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is seeking public input on two of the most feasible alternatives for a long-term replacement of the bridge. Those two potential options are a full bridge replacement or a tunnel under the Savannah River. GDOT plans to finalize the concept by early 2026. Depending on funds, construction is expected to take another 9 to 11 years. Meanwhile, a temporary project will be to replace the bridge’s suspension cables and reprofile the structure to gain higher clearance.
