(First Alert 4) - The Kirkwood Athletic Association fields off Marshall Road will soon be demolished after neglect, vandalism and a state of disrepair. The city of Kirkwood voted to approve demolition last month of the fields and structures. “Sad, disappointed, but not surprised,” said Eric Eickmeyer, the former president of Kirkwood Atheltic Association who ran the nonprofit. They had a series of tough years which prompted them to transfer the property over to the city of Kirkwood. “We didn’t have money to put gas in the mowers,” Eickmeyer said. __________________________________ This project comprises of the complete removal of all structures, fencing, utility abandonment, pavement removal from within the current fencing boundaries. All contents of buildings and grounds become the responsibility of the contractor for removal from the property. All structures and materials are to be razed and removed from the site. The semi-trailer parked outside the confines of the fence is also to be removed from the site. The paved parking area outside the fencing is not included and shall remain. Preserve or remove designated trees as identified by city staff. Trees designated for removal will be marked with a pink 'X'. The ballfield lighting tower, poles and light fixtures associated with lighting the fields are to remain intact on site. All fencing except that which confines the tower is to be removed as late into the project as possible to provide continued site security. The structures have been inspected by an abatement contractor for asbestos/lead by the City. That analysis will be furnished to the contractor. Upon identification of materials requiring abatement, those materials will be removed according to state, county and local regulations prior to razing the structures. Required Chain of Custody of such materials is required and recorded/filed with the governing authority. Disposal will also adhere to regulations as required, and be transported/deposited at a facility with Chain of Custody according to regulations.
