The county's planning commission will review the 2025-2029 plan at 6 p.m. on on Feb. 1. Various department heads and agencies formulated the initial draft for review. One of the flagship projects is a plan to build a new middle school or renovate Culpeper Middle School to modernize the building, which was originally constructed in 1977, and improve operating efficiency. The location would be determined. The project is slated for the fiscal year 2025 and is estimated to cost $69 million in debt funds. Prices are in fiscal year 2022 dollars. Also in the realm of education, plans are underway to spend $150,000 from the general fund in 2025 to hire an architect and engineering firm to develop a master plan to construct a new school, most likely an additional elementary school. Also in 2025, a plan to spend $38 million in debt funds to build a new elementary school as needed as student population numbers increase. As for 2029, plans are in place to renovate a portion of the oldest park of Sycamore Park Elementary School, which was constructed in 1961, to modernize and improve operating efficiency. The renovation would also include a new wing to replace the mobile classroom space. The project is estimated to cost $18.69 million in debt funds. Additionally, the county is exploring initiatives to enhance county services. This includes investments into a courthouse expansion. The circuit court is at capacity and operating on Saturdays. The district court is also at capacity. The capital improvements plan outlines $10 million in debt funds in fiscal year 2028 for the project.
