The Liberty Park-based company submitted the lowest of two bids, said BJCC CEO/Executive Director Tad Snider. "This is a critical milestone for this project," Snider said. "We are excited to work with Stone Building as we witness the transformation and unveiling of the amphitheater, adding a new attraction to benefit our community." Site preparation began earlier this year under the direction of SDAC, the low bidder and Black-owned firm that secured the $3.1 million site grading contract. The open-air amphitheater will rise just north of Protective Stadium and Top Golf on 25th Street North, anchoring the $300 million mixed-use development on the 50-acre campus of the former Carraway Hospital. The amphitheater, which is to be owned by the Birmingham Jefferson County Convention Complex and operated by Live Nation under an agreement signed last September, will join the office, retail, and residential space, along with two hotels, planned for the site by developer Corporate Realty. The music venue is scheduled to open in the summer of 2025. Over $11 million of eligible amphitheater construction spending will go to minority- and women-owned businesses, according to a statement from the BJCC. Eligible spending includes costs that can be contracted out and involve goods and services offered by minority vendors, according to the statement. Also, more than 33% of the $2.7 million amphitheater design contract went to minority- and women-owned firms, Snider said in the statement. "The BJCC is committed to maximizing opportunities for all businesses to be a part of our projects," Snider said, "We are thrilled that we have been able to achieve increased diversity in the amphitheater project, particularly in the construction area, where state bid law limits our flexibility. It's a credit to Stone Building that they were intentional in extending opportunities to minority- and women-owned firms for this project." The amphitheater will be owned by the BJCC and operated by Live Nation under an agreement signed last September. Under the agreement, Live Nation, the same entity which owns Oak Mountain Amphitheater, will manage the facility for the BJCC. Live Nation will also contribute toward the construction costs of the amphitheater. The agreement consists of a 20-year term with two five-year renewal options. “This will round out the venues available at the BJCC, and it will complement the other investments that have been made in our facilities and in north Birmingham,” Snider said. “The amphitheater will benefit our local residents, but it will also bring people to Birmingham who will stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and shop in our stores.” The amphitheater is expected to stimulate other developments in the north Birmingham area, and construction alone will create jobs and economic activity in metro Birmingham, he said. It’s a credit to Stone Building that they were intentional in extending opportunities to minority- and women-owned firms for this project.” To make the project possible, the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau agreed to forgo a portion of the lodging taxes from the BJCC’s Sheraton and Westin hotels to cover the BJCC’s debt for the amphitheater’s construction. In addition, the city of Birmingham, Jefferson County and Live Nation each contributed $5 million upfront to lower the amount borrowed by the BJCC. The amphitheater will be located in the Druid Hills neighborhood near the former Carraway hospital site. It will be part of the Star Uptown redevelopment of the Carraway site, which has been idle and deteriorating for 15 years. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Prequalified Bidders will be required to make a good faith effort to include MBE and DBE companies in the execution of this project.
