Project Description: Within the Kulani Tract of Pu`u Maka`ala Natural Area Reserve, three steel water tanks are located at two different locations. The Mauna Loa Boys School (MLBS) Water tank is approximately 400,000 gallons. There are 2 additional 400,000-gallon tanks situated in the South Boundary unit just off Kulani Cone Road. Tanks were acquired in 2010 when former Dept. of Public Safety Kulani Correctional facility was shutdown. The area is of high conservation value for its highly intact native forest and watershed as well as the high concentrations of endangered forest birds and plants. The area experienced a fire in 2016. The tanks are the only available High Elevation Water supply to cover and protect over 250,000 acres of public land from wildfire. Project Goals: o Repair rupture in MLBS tank o Scale and remove rust from exterior of all tanks including tops- collect and dispose of rust flakes o Treat rust with rust preventative / inhibitor o Paint all the Tanks with DTM paint (Direct To Metal) premium Marine grade metal paint o Replace and repair access covers and access ladders o Replace plumbing fittings and fixtures to support fire- fighting apparatus o Re-surface catchment of MLBS catchment with concrete weather sealant All supplies and materials to be provided by vendor.
