Department of Transportation has launched a website about a handful of road improvement projects, including ones that impact major roadways in Moore County. The Sandhills Area Improvement Projects currently includes three road projects in Aberdeen, Southern Pines and Pinehurst. The projects aim to improve safety, ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time, leading to an improved quality of life for residents. The roads included in the project are listed below: * U.S. 15-501 and N.C. 211 from U.S. 1 (Sandhills Boulevard) in Aberdeen to Brucewood Road in Southern Pines (U-5814); * U.S. 1 (Sandhills Boulevard) from Roseland Road to the U.S. 15-501 intersection and from West Main Street in Aberdeen to Old U.S. 1 in Southern Pines (U-5815B) and * N.C. 5 from U.S. 1 in Aberdeen to the intersection of Trotter Drive and Blake Boulevard in Pinehurst (U-5756). Planning and development are underway with initial construction efforts slated to begin this fall. These initial construction efforts include clearing and grubbing of vegetation from the right-of-way and relocation of dry utilities such as power and gas. As construction progresses, efforts will be made to minimize impacts to travelers. Regular updates will be shared with the community about the construction efforts to help travelers make advanced plans to avoid delays. Construction is anticipated to be complete by Spring 2029.
