The 10,000-foot runway, labeled 5L/23R, is used for long-haul flights and is critical for service to Germany, the West Coast and other faraway destinations as RDU continues to expand its reach. But its upkeep is expensive. On Thursday, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board approved a preservation construction contract worth $7 million for Balfour Beatty Construction. It's the sixth "session" of the contract that's meant to extend the life of the runway. And it likely won't be the last. The airport is running about $7 million a year to keep the runway going, RDU Chief Development Officer Bill Sandifer told the board. The runway preservation project started in 2019. By the time the new runway broke ground in 2023, the airport had already spent $30 million to keep the current airstrip open. The new runway is cleared to be up to 10,639 feet long, which will allow larger planes to serve RDU. "Without that runway, your transatlantic service is lost, your West Coast service is lost," airport CEO Michael Landguth said in 2023. And when you lose service, "it's almost impossible to get it back." The new runway, which will cost more than $1 billion to build, is a key part of RDU's $2.5 billion spending plan, which also includes terminal expansion and improvements to John Brantley Boulevard among other projects. Airport officials have said federal dollars will be essential to the capital plan. This year through March, more than 1.6 million people have boarded planes at RDU (a 2.2 percent increase over last year), including nearly 66,000 bound for international destinations.
