Cathedral Oaks Non-Native Tree Removal. Question Deadline 06/20/2024 at 4:00 PM PT. Project Location The project site is located within a closed area of Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve on the southeastern border of Lexington Reservoir, approximately 2 miles east of the Idylwild Road exit from Highway 17. The project site is accessible through Gate SA19 via Alma Bridge Road and a paved private access road off Alma Bridge Road that is owned and operated by Midpen. The project area has steep slopes, with most non-native trees marked for removal on slopes between 0-35% or 35-50%. The paved road levels out and ends due east of the eucalyptus stand; the relatively flat area at the terminus of the road may be used as a potential staging area. See Attachment A: Project Location Map. The Cathedral Oaks 100% Non-Native Inventory (Project) is located in Santa Clara County along the eastern side of Lexington Reservoir on Alma Bridge Road, within the western extent of the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve boundary in the Cathedral Oaks section of the preserve (Map 1). Highway 17 runs within a mile due west of the Project and is the primary route to arrive at the site. Estimated Amount: $350,000.00 Description: Located approximately 4.5 miles southeast of the Town of Los Gatos, Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve comprises approximately 19,000 acres of open space in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It spans serpentine grasslands, rocky and steep chaparral, dense stands of bay trees, shaded oak woodland forests, deep ravines, and riparian corridors. Currently, approximately 6,618 acres are open to the public. The southeastern portion of the preserve is referred to as the "Cathedral Oaks" area, approximately 2.5-acres of which are primarily composed of dense, homogeneous eucalyptus trees. To date, Midpen has conducted forest health and invasive species treatments within the general vicinity of this area. This project seeks to remove non-native trees, address invasive species, and implement erosion control measures supporting long-term site restoration. The tree removal work is anticipated to occur no earlier than September 2, 2024, and finish no later than November 15, 2024, to avoid impacts on nesting birds. The District reserves the right to reject any or all proposals and to waive any conditions or formalities.
