Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Leverett, Massachusetts. Completed plans call for site work for a bridge / tunnel; for paving for a bridge / tunnel; for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; and for the construction of a bridge / tunnel.
Location: Leverett Bridge Replacement, L-09-003, Millers Road over Roaring Brook District: 2 Project Type: Bridge - Construction MADOT - Bridge Replacement - Millers Road Work under this contract consists of the replacement of the existing Bridge No. L-09- 003(0QR) Miller's Road over Roaring Brook with a new bridge. Miller's Road itself will also be reconstructed, which is about 350 feet long. The bridge will be closed during construction and a temporary access detour road is proposed under this contract, connecting Miller's Road on the southern end to January Road. The Contractor is responsible for notifying the DPW and residents two weeks ahead of the bridge closure. Access to the east side of the bridge will be primarily via the temporary access detour road as access to Miller's Road will be closed off from Shutesbury Road. All equipment used for the construction of the bridge shall have access through the temporary detour road. The capacity of Bridge L-09-003(0QR) will need to be re-evaluated by the Contractor's design engineer prior to use by construction vehicles with regards to both the current condition of Bridge L-09-003(0QR) and the exact vehicles that will be using the bridge to access the project site. If the contractor proposes to use construction vehicles that do not fit the above listed parameters, the Contractor's design engineer can evaluate the ability of Bridge L-09-003(0QR) to carry that vehicle. If the weight of the vehicle exceeds the above listed parameters and cannot be adjusted downward to fit these described parameters, the vehicle will be allowed to use the temporary detour to access the construction site. The work includes furnishing all labor, materials and equipment required for the demolition, removal and disposal of the bridge foundations and bridge superstructure and constructing a new 52'-0" long single span bridge. The proposed bridge replacement includes construction of two new abutments, one cantilever abutment and one gravity abutment, and four wingwalls, two cantilever wingwalls and two gravity wingwalls, elastomeric bearings, precast concrete deck beams, cast-in-place concrete deck, Superpave asphalt pavement, safety curb, and S3-TL4 bridge railing. In addition to the bridge replacement, the proposed work to be done includes minor adjustments to the horizontal and vertical roadway alignments, reconstruction of the existing roadway, and all related work in accordance with the Plans and Specifications. During construction, no heavy equipment shall be allowed within the wetlands or river. All heavy equipment shall be located at the road surface or from the top of the bank. Concrete formwork may be constructed from the top or sides. Any additional work and equipment required within the wetlands and river shall only consist of workers and hand tools. The proposed work also includes corner sight distance improvements by elevating the profile on Miller's Road at the intersection with Shutesbury Road to increase sight distance for vehicles exiting Miller's Road. Additionally, the proposed work includes the development and implementation of approved construction procedures for safe and efficient movement of traffic and coordination of all proposed activities with other contractors and utilities working within the project limits. Also included under this contract is removal of the temporary detour roadway once the new bridge is in service, and restoration of the detour alignment to pre-construction conditions. The Contractor shall take note that this Project is subject to conditions contained in environmental permits issued by federal, state, and local acts and agencies, including but not limited to, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Environmental Protection Water Quality Certificate. The Contractor shall comply with the permit Conditions for this Project which includes, but are not limited to, conditions for submittals, reviews, and approvals for pre-construction, construction, and post-construction work for river channel restoration, river bank restoration, and treatment and discharge of dewatering run-off. All work under this Contract shall be done in conformance with the 2024 Standard Specifications for Highways and Bridges, the Supplemental Specifications contained in this book, the 2017 Construction Standard Details, the Traffic Management Plans and Detail Drawings, MassDOT Work Zone Safety Temporary Traffic Control, the 1990 Standard Drawings for Signs and Supports; the 2015 Overhead Signal Structure and Foundation Standard Drawings, the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) with Revisions 1, 2, and 3 and the November 2022 Massachusetts Amendments to the MUTCD; the 1968 Standard Drawings for Traffic Signals and Highway Lighting; The American Standard for Nursery Stock; the Plans and these Special Provisions.
