Emerson Street over Butte Arm Canal Bridge Replacement. Description: The project will replace the existing bridge and relocate existing utilities that run underneath the abutments. The proposed bridge will have a span of 40' and a curb-to-curb width of 37'. The proposed bridge with have two lanes that are 12' wide and include 6.5' shoulders on either side. There are also 6.5' sidewalks planned on either side of the bridge. The proposed bridge will be single-span precast prestressed voided slabs with a 5" concrete cast in place deck and a 3" hot mix asphalt overlay wearing surface. The bridge will include ITD Standard Combination Rail on both sides. Site Address: Emerson St Over Butte Arm Canal. Value Notes: $1 million - $2 million Bridge Key Number 31330 is located in Idaho Falls, Idaho and carries Emerson Avenue over the Butte Arm Canal. The bridge is located between E 16th Street and E 17th Street. The existing steel girder bridge has a span of 35.0', a total width out-to-out of 50.8', and a skew of 33. There are existing sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. The existing structure was built in 1956. The project will replace the existing bridge and relocate existing utilities that run underneath the abutments. The proposed bridge will have a span of 40' and a curb-to-curb width of 37'. The proposed bridge will have two lanes that are 12' wide and include 6.5' shoulders on either side. There are also 6.5' sidewalks planned on either side of the bridge. The proposed bridge will be single-span precast prestressed voided slabs with a 5" concrete cast in place deck and a 3" hot mix asphalt overlay wearing surface. The bridge will include ITD Standard Combination Rail on both sides. The horizontal alignment is based off existing Right-Of-Way which mostly matches the existing centerline of the roadway. The vertical alignment is higher than the existing to meet the 1' freeboard requirement over the operating canal water surface elevation. Based on conversations with the geotechnical engineer, Schnabel, shallow cast-in-place concrete spread footings have been recommended for the location of this bridge. The proposed footings will be located behind the existing abutments. There will be minor construction within the Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM) of Butte Arm Canal. Most of the work below the OHWM will be excavating, placing rip rap, and the placement of an 8" water line and casing under the canal. The water line will be sleeved through the canal for maintenance per City of Idaho Falls requirements. The construction of the bridge replacement will feature a full road closure at the project location. The closure will need a half-mile detour route using Higbee Ave. It is anticipated that this closure will last one winter construction season. The project will generally include the use of excavators, back hoes, bull dozers, dump trucks, concrete pump trucks, and a crane to build the proposed bridge and remove the existing bridge. Equipment is anticipated to be stored within the existing roadway during closure. This project qualifies for a non-reporting 404 permit under the Nation Wide 3 Permit. An IDWR Permit is not required.
