For the last 50 years, the State has leased the 55-acre fairgrounds property from the City of Petaluma, while retaining full control of all events that take place there. On December 31, 2023, the 50-year lease expired, and the City took back control of the property. Upon assuming management of the property, the City executed agreements with each of the existing tenants during a period of transition to minimize disruptions as plans continue to be developed to ensure yearround public use of this taxpayer-owned property. Now that the City is in charge of managing the property, it's evident that there are deferred maintenance issues that must be addressed to guarantee a safe and functional space for the public. One of these pressing needs is the replacement of the sewer pump station. The existing pump station is in a dilapidated state, with numerous safety and operational concerns. Due to the current state and design of the pump station, basic operation and maintenance is infeasible and requires emergency, temporary repairs to make it safe and operational once again. A complete demolition and rebuild of the existing pump station, wet well, and all associated equipment will be required once the future of the fairgrounds is determined. As of July 25, 2024, this project is included in the city's 2024-2029 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
