"With passenger numbers on track to break records again this year, this project is essential to meeting the demands of today and tomorrow," Sacramento County Supervisor Patrick Kennedy said, in a statement. The $140 million pedestrian walkway will run adjacent to the automated people mover that transports passengers from the Terminal B entrance, ticket counters and baggage claim to the security line and the airline gates. The new walkway will increase the number of people able to move around the terminal at a time, as well as allow for the connection of a possible third terminal at the airport in the future. "This walkway, with two sky bridges and a hub, is built with the future in mind," Supervisor Phil Serna said, in a statement. "They will provide SMF's passengers a flexible portal that can connect to a future concourse to meet our growing region's need for air travel for decades to come." The project is not being paid for with any local tax money. The new walkway got $33 million in grant funding from the 2022 federal infrastructure bill. The rest of the funding is coming from low-interest loans and bonds that will be paid back with airport revenue. Balfour Beatty is the construction manager on the project. The pedestrian walkway is one of several new projects that are in development as part of an overall airport renovation plan, called SMForward. The plan also calls for a 3,400-stall parking garage built on the current parking lot next to Terminal B, expansion of both airport terminals, a new ground transportation center for taxi and ride-share services serving both terminals, and a new rental car facility. ______________________ This is a multi-year project and includes the preliminary analysis and conceptual design to identify and explore walkway alternatives between Terminal B and Concourse B in order to provide an alternative to the Automated People Mover and eliminate a single point of failure. The project is included in the Sacramento County's FY 2023-2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
