SEAN ROWLEY Senior Reporter Sep 24, 2024 Updated Sep 24, 2024 1 of 3 Facebook Twitter Email Print Copy article link Save Play Video PARK HILL – Three weeks after they mentioned additional spending for Sequoyah Schools in their Cherokee National Holiday speeches, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Deputy Chief Bryan Warner applied their signatures to a $65 million Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan on Sept. 20. Passed by the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council on Sept. 16, the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan is the largest capital investment in the 153-year history of Sequoyah Schools, with funds used to improve and enhance the campus facilities at Sequoyah High School. Using federal American Rescue Plan funding, the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan, which is part of the Cherokee Nation Respond Recover and Rebuild Plan, will include a new academic building, remodeled dorms, an auditorium and performing arts center, a multipurpose facility with an indoor track and further improvements to the football field. The Sequoyah High School enhancements also include a cheer room, locker rooms and a team-meeting classroom. “Sequoyah Schools sets the standard across Indian Country for education excellence,” Hoskin said. “This capital plan delivers a first-class campus to match the first-class efforts of Sequoyah Schools faculty, staff, administrators and students.” According to the text of the resolution, the plan represents “a substantial generational investment” in the education of CN citizens and members of other federally recognized tribes who attend, or will attend, Sequoyah Schools. “The billion-dollar Respond, Recover and Rebuild Plan is a product of collaboration between the legislative and executive branches and once again delivered for the Cherokee people,” Tribal Council Speaker Mike Shambaugh said. “The Sequoyah Capital Plan is a key part of Respond, Recover and Rebuild and it will pay off huge dividends for generations to come.” Warner said the capital improvement that was passed surpassed the original suggestion. “In 2021, we proposed a historic investment of $20 million for Sequoyah Schools,” Warner said. “As we refined the Respond, Recover and Rebuild Plan to make generational investments, we knew that a larger vision for improving Sequoyah Schools had to be a priority.” The CN owns and operates Sequoyah High School on a 90-acre campus south of Tahlequah under a contract with the Bureau of Indian Education. The school started as the Cherokee Orphan Asylum in 1871. It operated as an Indian boarding school for much of the 20th century until it was acquired by the tribe in 1985. Hoskin recounted some of the school’s history, citing its founding “when the Cherokee people had the right, the unfettered right, to govern themselves.” “But by 1872, there was reason for Cherokees to wonder and to be worried and to have some anxiety about the future,” he said. “We know what was happening in that part of history in the wake of the Civil War and facing the imposition of new legal constraints on the Cherokee Nation, and facing that all-too-familiar quest by others for what was ours and what was promised us.” The history of Sequoyah Schools mirrors many of the challenges and successes of the entire CN, Hoskin said. “A young chief named Wilma Mankiller led the charge to get Sequoyah Schools back into the hands of the Cherokee Nation as we started to close out the 20th century in a new era,” Hoskin said. “The government of the United States started to take its boot off the neck of this great nation, enabling us to do what we've always been able to do – chart our own destiny, govern our own affairs, exercise the sovereign rights handed down by the creator to look out for the most vulnerable, and to charge into a future and invest in that future.” Work involving the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. ______________________________________________________ Sequoyah High School - Bid Package #1 - SITE WORK Bid Package #1 Work Includes: Earthwork, Site Utilities, and Storm Sewer & Drainage Attention to the following bid requirements: - Complete, sign and include Attachments A, B, C, D, & E found at the end of this bid package document along with your bid form with your sealed bid. - Cashier's check, certified check or Surety Bid Bond for 5% of Base Bid required for all bids over $100,000. - Performance, payment, and maintenance bonds will be required by the lowest responsible bidder for any bid over $100,000.
