The project broke ground on Oct. 29 and was funded with $2.5 million from the state, the remainder from American Rescue Plan Act funding and municipal dollars. Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant said it was a “long-anticipated project” and thanked State Sen. Jim Boyd and State Rep. Will Robinson for helping obtain funding in the state budget for the project. “We knew it would take more funding, so we reached out requesting state appropriations, and I guess you might say the rest was history because our commission embraced the idea, and we reached out to some honored guests in Tallahassee,” Bryant said in a statement. Palmetto’s Ward 1, Phase III project will specifically target infrastructure in the city’s northeastern sector. The project will bring new water and sewer lines and improve stormwater drainage to residents living east of 14th Avenue W and north of 10th Street E. Once the aging water lines are replaced, crews will install Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and later repave the residential streets in the area. Palmetto is experiencing a significant wave of growth. Several developers have recently invested in multifamily housing projects in the city, and earlier this year, Detwiler’s Farm Market broke ground on a new warehouse and distribution center at the Florida International Tradeport. SeaPort Manatee recently received $9.5 million from Gov. Ron DeSantis following severe damage from Hurricane Milton. Initial damage assessments estimate roughly $225 million in potential losses at the port, one of the city’s largest economic drivers. ____________________________ The E. Palmetto Avenue and Live Oak Drainage Improvement project is located west of Pensacola, in unincorporated Escambia County. The project area is along E. Winthrop Avenue and E. Palmetto Avenue between S. 2nd Street and Live Oak Avenue. This project will include the installation of a collection and conveyance storm water system with a filtration device and the grading of existing ditches located in the right-of-way (ROW). The project area is in an older subdivision with little to no existing storm water infrastructure. The area is known to have flooding and hazardous ditches. The Drainage Improvements include the addition of a storm water drainage system that will be located in the E Winthrop Avenue and E Palmetto Avenue ROW. The storm water system will tie into existing infrastructure in two locations via an existing drainage manhole to along E. Winthrop Avenue and a proposed doghouse manhole in the E. Palmetto Avenue ROW. Treatment will be provided through a Filtration Device that is to be installed along the existing 42 storm pipe located in a county easement adjacent to E Palmetto Avenue.
