District has identified Mechanicsville Elementary School as the next campus-style school to be replaced. The new MES will follow the campus-style model used in recent Hanover school replacements, which typically includes separate wings or buildings for grade levels, connected by covered walkways or shared common areas. Classrooms will be designed to support collaborative learning, flexible seating, and technology integration. Spaces for small-group instruction, special education, and STEM activities are expected to be included. The design will incorporate secure entry points, updated surveillance systems, and clear sightlines throughout the campus. Plans include expanded playgrounds, outdoor classrooms, and green spaces to support physical activity and environmental education. This project is included in the county's 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of August 13, 2025, design would begin in 2027-2028, construction 2028-2030, with a targeted 2030-31 school year opening. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
