LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Residents who live in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis are used to Interstate 55 construction, and they’re set to get even more in that area. But neighbors are happy it’s happening. “Let’s get it moving. We’re used to it. We’re used to the construction by now,” said Debbie Demma. Debbie Demma and her neighbor Pat Jenkins are pleased changes are coming to the Loughborough Bridge near their home. They looked at MoDOT’s two ideas — and have an aversion to one of them. “I don’t like the roundabout idea at all,” said Demma. MoDOT held an open house in south St. Louis on Monday, showing proposals for bridge replacements over I-55 at Weber and Loughborough. And one of the designs is a form of roundabout. “When you do that, you’ve got to make sure they were designed for the future. Not just a repetition of what they’ve done in the past,” said Wade. MoDOT area engineer for the city of St. Louis Jen Wade says they want to hear from the public on both designs. One is similar to what Loughborough looks like now and would be more familiar to drivers. The other is essentially a traffic oval — or a roundabout. “We are going to be able to design this so it’s more intuitive than even maybe what is out there today,” said Wade. Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer is getting behind it, saying it’s safer. “As soon as you’re on that route, you’re staying on that route until you get to your destination,” said Schweitzer. Still, Jenkins and Demma aren’t convinced. “But a lot of people don’t know exactly how to maneuver in those roundabouts.” Demma worries about pedestrians. “A lot of people walk, they don’t have cars, walk all through the, it’ll be a disaster, there’s going to be people hit.” Both design proposals would get rid of the current northbound exit to Loughborough, which requires drivers to exit onto Idaho Avenue first. Demma and Jenkins live on Idaho and have experienced crashes due to the interstate traffic. “They come off that highway and they think they’re still on the highway,” said Jenkins. They’re happy to hear Idaho will be a dead-end road. “It’s going to be a lot less riff raff,” said Jenkins. MoDOT is also working to repair a bridge on I-55 over a Union Pacific railroad. While they initially intended to repave it, the girders were damaged to the point of needing a total bridge replacement. The northbound entry and exit ramps are closed now for that reason. And soon, they’ll open up, and MoDOT will work on the other side. Wade said they now know what to do to not destroy the girders. At the same time as MoDOT’s bridge replacement on Loughborough and Weber, the city of St. Louis will also replace a nearby bridge over railroad tracks.
