Renovation of a medical facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Working plans call for the renovation of a medical facility.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has undertaken a review of all AHS, Cancer Care Alberta, and Covenant Health healthcare pharmacy sites to establish the existing facilities' level of compliance with the newly legislated National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) Standards adopted by the Alberta College of Pharmacists. The Alberta College of Pharmacists, following the adoption of these Standards across Canada, has mandated that AHS pharmacies meet these standards. The Main Pharmacy at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) requires a high level of upgrades in order to be compliant with the NAPRA standards. The recommended space for the future pharmacy is the vacant Clean Laundry space in the lower level (basement) of the MHRH. This space is a total area of 1390 m2 which will be split between the future pharmacy and existing linen services. Adjacent to this space is the loading dock and dirty laundry space to the west; a workshop space to the north; and washrooms, storage, offices as well as a corridor to the east and south. This space is best suited for support space and non-clinical programming. Access is ideal for non direct patient access, as this portion of the hospital is considered "back of house" and is classified as high potential use by a support service. Access to the loading dock is an important connection for the department and there is a existing link to this location along with convenient access to the main hospital. It is estimated at this time the pharmacy will require a maximum allowable space of 850 component gross square metres (CGSM) to accommodate all their needs. If additional net area is added during design, other areas will require reductions to fit within the allowable space. TIMELINE: Working drawings are underway. Engineering consultant will not be released for publication. Request for Proposals for construction management services closed at the owner on March 31, 2026 and submissions are currently under review. Construction start is planned for May 2026. *Estimated Value: $14,000,000 to $14,500,000. The value for this project is based on a financial range. The value is listed as the highest possible cost from the range provided by a stakeholder or official project document.
