(WIVT/WBGH) – A capital improvement plan for Vestal Central School District barely passed yesterday even though the district had stripped out the proposal’s most controversial element. By a vote of 287 to 260, Vestal residents approved the nearly $40 million Capital Improvement Project that would install air conditioning at Vestal Hills and Clayton Avenue elementaries and at the high school. It also includes the installation of lights at Sammon Field, a video scoreboard at Dick Hoover Stadium, and upgrades to the sound system and lighting in the high school auditorium. Pulled from the original proposal was a plan to convert the recreational soccer fields at Ross Corners Park into a new bus garage. The district had argued that it needed more space than available at the current location which is on the high school campus in order to install sufficient charging systems to comply with a state mandate to transition to electric-powered school buses.
