The Town of Banff is seeking a qualified contractor to design, drill, complete, and evaluate a ground source energy (i.e. geoexchange) test well at 50 Wolf St. in Banff, Alberta (Appendix A), as part of preconstruction feasibility work in support of the Town's upcoming affordable housing development at the site. The test well will be a single 150 m vertical borehole, to be completed as a closed-loop ground source heating/cooling well for testing purposes. Depending on test results, the well may eventually be brought into operational service if/when the housing project is built, potentially as part of a larger multi-well ground source heat exchanger. The proposed project start date (mobilization) is Monday, April 14, 2025. Project Background & Location The Town of Banff is a leader in the adoption of green building and renewable energy technologies. The goal of the proposed project is to evaluate the economic and technical aspects of ground source energy in downtown Banff with the aim of de-risking the technology for local builders, developers, and property owners. The 50 Wolf St. location was selected because a sustainable affordable housing project is currently being planned for the site, with detailed design work scheduled to commence in Q2 2025. Data from this location will also fill a significant gap in the sparse local geological dataset (discussed below). The planned well location is in an asphalt public parking lot (~0.3 acres or 1270 m2) with straightforward access and no overhead obstructions. A site survey is provided in Appendix B. The parking lot is owned and operated by the Town of Banff and can be closed for the duration of the project.
