New roundabout alert: Public asked for feedback on traffic feature at U.S. Highway 12 and Old Highway 9 near Grand Mound Community members can learn more about a planned roundabout on U.S. Highway 12 west of Grand Mound during an online open house, according to a news release from the Washington state Department of Transportation. Beginning Wednesday, May 14, the Washington State Department of Transportation launched the online open house for a new single-lane roundabout. The roundabout will replace a stop sign at the U.S. Highway 12 intersection with Old Highway 9. "WSDOT studied crashes along this corridor between 2019 and 2024," WSDOT stated in a project description. "We found the most common types of crashes were T-bone and rear end. That’s why a roundabout is the best solution at this intersection. Drivers enter the roundabout at an angle to eliminate the T-bone collision. They also enter at a lower speed to reduce the severity of crashes. This pre-design will use data and community input to develop the roundabout design." The roundabout project is funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The estimated cost to design and build the roundabout is $4.3 million. Visitors to the online open house are encouraged to leave feedback to help with the final design of the roundabout. The Washington state Department of Transportation routinely reviews intersections along state highways in rural areas around the state to find ways to reduce potential collisions. Roundabouts help reduce the potential for crashes while keeping people moving, the release said.
