Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Provo, Utah. Conceptual plans call for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and for paving for a bridge / tunnel.
https://www.newsbreak.com/news/4088297966854-64-year-old-bridge-over-provo-river-scheduled-for-10-million-replacement PROVO, Utah (KUTV) -- After years of planning, Provo city officials said the bridge along 820 North is finally scheduled to be replaced. The 64-year-old bridge has reached its retirement age; and public works director Gordon Haight said with the growth happening around it, it's time to replace it. "This is the one (the bridge) that's the worst," Haight said. "We have a number of bridges across the Provo River, but most of them are in really good shape. Haight pointed out the low, rusting guardrails; narrow sidewalks and bike lanes; and, the decaying underside of the bridge. He said the city has been monitoring the bridge's deterioration for the past four years. Growth in the area has meant more cars on the road driving across the bridge - not to mention, people venturing underneath it on the Provo River Trail. "We've got our kids and dogs and bike riders. We want it to be safe," said Provo resident Amber Miller. The city has assured the public the bridge is not on the verge of collapse, but just patching up the problems would cost more than just redoing it. "The engineer's estimate is around $10 million, so we'll see what the actual price comes in at," Haight said. Most of that money is coming from the Mountainland Association of Governments - an entity that doles out state funding to projects like these. Haight said they've been sitting on funds they applied for four years ago, while they planned the reconstruction. "Obviously, it's a very used bridge. People walk under it all the time on the river path," Miller said. "If it needs to be replaced, and experts say it needs to be replaced to be safe, then we probably want it to be safe." Bids for the project go out Monday, and by the end of August it should be under construction. "When this bridge comes under construction, we'll have to have a complete closure of the road, so there will be a significant detour for about six to eight months while this is under construction," Haight said. City officials said they expect the project to take roughly a year to complete. __________________ Replacement and Rehabilitation - Structure Location : * Provo 820 N Bridge Replacement Provo 820 N Bridge Replacement County : Region 4 As of December 18 , 2025, the project is in Conceptual status.
