Site work for a water / sewer project in Charlottesville, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for site work for a water / sewer project.
Residual liquids and solids produced during the water treatment process at the South Rivanna Water Treatment Plant are routed through an equalization basin to two residuals clarifiers. Sludge is pumped to a belt filter press in the Solids Handling Facility, and clarified water is discharged to the South Fork Rivanna River under a VPDES permit issued by the Virginia DEQ. In the future, anticipated increases in solids processing will necessitate an alternative means of disposing of sludge from the treatment process. This project includes preliminary and final design of a new sewer connection to convey sludge to the sanitary sewer system, as well as right of way acquisition, permitting, and construction costs. As of February 25, 2025, this project is included in the county's 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
