The project involves maintenance dredging of approximately 2,300,000 cubic yards from deep-draft federal navigation channels serving the Port of Baltimore. The work is scheduled to occur between November 2025 and March 2026. Dredging depths will range from 35 to 50 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), with an additional 1 to 2 feet of allowable overdepth. Around 1,830,000 cubic yards will be removed from the Maryland approach channels--Brewerton Eastern Extension, Swan Point, Craighill, and possibly Tolchester--and placed at the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystems Restoration Project at Poplar Island. Approximately 500,000 cubic yards will be dredged from the Baltimore Harbor Channels--Brewerton, Brewerton Angle, and Seagirt West--and placed at the Cox Creek Dredged Material Containment Facility. The estimated construction cost ranges from $25,000,000 to $100,000,000. The work will take place in heavily trafficked commercial waterways supporting the Port of Baltimore. Required equipment includes one to two clamshell dredges with 30+ cubic yard capacity, one 24 to 30-inch hydraulic unloader, six to eight large tugs, six to eight material scows ranging from 2,500 to 6,000 cubic yards, a drag bar and barge, and appropriate attendant plant and pipeline. Dredging will be conducted using clamshell/bucket and scow methods, with placement completed within approximately 120 calendar days from receipt of Notice-to-Proceed.
