Site work for a water / sewer project in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Completed plans call for site work for a water / sewer project.

The B / C wharf structure provides a deep-sea vessel berth on each side and is approximately 180 meters / 590' long. The wharf deck for Berth B (west side) is 21.3 meters / 70' wide and the wharf deck Berth C (east) is 18.3 meters / 60' wide forming an overall width of 39.6 meters / 130'. The wharves are supported by 300 mm / 12" diameter creosoted timber piles, 343 mm ' 14" x 343 / 14" mm creosoted timber pile caps, laminated treated sawn lumber decking on Dock B and pre-cast concrete deck panels on Dock C. Both decks are covered with asphalt. Dock B has diagonal timber brace piles in both directions. Dock C has timber brace piles only to the berthing face. Access to the wharf is provided by a trestle that accommodates two-way traffic for legal axle truck loading that is approximately 51 meters / 50' long and 15 / 50' meters wide. The trestle deck is comprised of steel members on the west side and concrete tees on the east side, both supported by creosoted timber piles including batter piles, creosoted timber walers and creosoted timber diagonal bracing on most of the bents. Dock C fendering system was designed by Public Works Canada for the port authority during the 1980's. The system is comprised of a group of three timber piles at each of the 76 pile bents that support the wharf. Backing timbers are secured between the top of the piles and energy absorbing rubber fenders at each pile bent. The wharf's perimeter timber beams support the rubber fenders that transfer ship impacts into the bents and batter piles for the lateral load- resisting system. Diagonal timber bracing is installed on each pile bent. The fendering system was designed to allow the rub piles to deflect with 65 mm deformation on the 125 mm outside diameter cylindrical rubber fenders at each pile bent. Each pile bent has horizontal load-resisting batter piles connected to the pile bent cap beams. The longitudinal timber between the fender piles and rubber fenders provides backing for the piles to secure the piles laterally and spread the ship impact onto the rubber fenders. Upon ship impact, they usually have some forward velocity, and this friction will impose a drag force trying to dislodge the outer piles. Much of the damage has been caused by vessel berthing. The ship hull shapes will normally contact many piles, but it appears that some hard landings have occurred due to evidence of damage over several spans of backing timbers.
