Matthews Computer Science Bldg. 15 includes departmental and general classrooms, class labs, and faculty offices. There are two tiered lecture classrooms and 16 various other classrooms and class labs. The building is showing its age due to the high use and minimal improvements over the years. The lighting levels in many areas are not adequate and provide a very ominous feeling as you approach and walk through the circulation spaces. The project will remodel all three floors and provide a more inviting and collaborative environment by enclosing the circulation space to create internal corridors and lobbies for enhanced security and more appropriate surroundings. The new lobbies will provide much needed student study areas. The project will provide new ceilings and lighting, finishes, and mechanical heating and cooling for the newly created circulation and lobbies. Existing classrooms will be renovated with new finishes, ceilings and lights. There is an increased interest in cyber security and the project will include new technology and infrastructure improvements to facilitate growth for the cyber security curriculum and programs. Additionally, the existing HVAC and electrical systems for the entire building will be evaluated and updated to replace old inefficient equipment, including better control systems and power distribution. IT service will also be evaluated to provide the needed network for current and expanded technologies. The project will also remodel and/or renovate the remaining other spaces for an improved and more current learning environment associated with collaboration and in keeping with the image the University needs to convey. As of February 3, 2026, this project is in the planning phase. A design firm has not been selected yet. Construction is expected to start in mid-2027 and be completed by the end of 2028.
